Numerical Simulation and Experimental Validation of Surface Roughness by the Smoothing Small Ball-Burnishing Process

The smoothing ball-burnishing process has commonly been used as a post-processing method to reduce the irregularities of machined surfaces. However, mechanism this rarely examined. In study, simulation procedure is proposed predict surface roughness burnished workpiece under varying burnishing forces. was firstly approximated by parabolic functions. then numerically simulated through two steps, namely elastic–plastic indentation ball on workpiece’s surface, and sliding movement tool. results were verified conducting small experiments oxygen-free copper (OFC) Polmax materials using load cell-embedded For OFC material, optimal force 3 N. obtained experimental 0.18 μm, value 0.14 μm. when set at its value—12 N, best 0.12 μm 0.10 respectively.
